Mi Jong Lee is a designer women’s ready-to-wear brand with a focus on unique fabrications, artisanal finishes and exceptional quality. The collection is designed and produced in New York, under the creative direction of the brand’s namesake, Korean-American designer Mi Jong Lee.
Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea. During her childhood, she traveled the world following her father’s diplomatic career, and lived in diverse cultures such as Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica. Lee graduated from Cornell University with honors in Sociology, but afterward followed her creative inclinations to study at Parsons The New School for Design. In 1982 Lee opened a retail store named Emmelle, building a dedicated customer base with her distinct style of understated elegance. Emmelle launched a wholesale division in 2007, and is now sold in over 65 specialty stores across the US.
Five years ago, Lee designed a capsule collection of innovative pieces for a collaborative art/fashion exhibition in Paris. For this project, Lee tapped into a more personal, artistic form of expression and began development of the brand that is now Mi Jong Lee.
Deeply influenced by her multicultural upbringing, art and architecture; Mi Jong Lee is a refined collection dedicated to couture fabrications and quality.
“I am always searching for unusual fabrics, and what I enjoy most is to place the flow of prints and textures, as well as the drape of fabric, in a design. It is like I am painting with these tools,” explains Lee of her method. “I love this process – it appeals to my Eastern sensibility of focus in flow.”Mi Jong Lee is designed and manufactured by Lee and her skilled team solely in New York, on premises at her studio in the Garment District.
